I scream, you scream, we all scream for.....juice?!?! I know by now most of you have heard something or another regarding the multitude of health benefits from juicing, which span from weight loss to disease reversals and so much more. I wanted to share with you my experience/opinions on the whole juicing craze.
A few years ago I watched a documentary on Netflix: Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. I'm sure I follow suit with most people who have watched the documentary in saying, from that moment on I was hooked on the idea of juicing. Shortly after watching the documentary, I started doing some online research on juice fasting. I looked up pros/cons, recipes, how to sites, and even asked friends their opinions. After some research, I decided it was time to try my own. Off to the grocery store I went! My shopping cart was full of the following: Kale, Apples, Carrots, Celery, Cucumbers, Pineapple, Ginger, Lemons, Limes, Oranges, Beets, and so much more. After buying all the groceries, I thought to myself how super expensive it is to juice. I spent about $100 on my supplies, and I had only planned on juicing for 5 days! However, when I thought long and hard about it, that's only about $20 per day, which if I ate out everyday it would have probably surpassed that amount. So, $100 didn't seem too bad. I decided to start on a weekend, in case I experienced any withdrawal type symptoms, I wanted to be in the comfort of my own home. The first day had it's ups and downs. I was a bit cranky, hungry, sluggish, and I had a headache. All of which were part of the detox. By the end of day 2 I was feeling less of all the symptoms, and I actually started to feel more energetic. The 3rd day rolled around and I was feeling on top of the world! By day 4, I decided to slowly add back in regular foods just to see how I felt. I added beans and whole fruits and vegetables. Same with day 5. As time went on, I eventually crept back into my old eating habits again.
A few weeks after my first juice fast, I started feeling like a big pile o'poo. I was less energetic, moody, had frequent upset stomachs, bloating, etc. I realized then how great I felt while on the fast compared to not fasting. I made a point to do a fast once a month at that point. I continued this for about a year or so, and eventually life just got in the way. I still juice every now and then, but definitely not like I should and want to. So, in short, my opinion on juicing? I LOVE it. While I know there are man naysayers out there who can find refutable evidence against juicing, I don't care :) It's something I have personally experienced myself, and the results were amazing. One of my absolute favorite juice I made is a green juice . It has celery, cucumber, green apples, kale, lemon and ginger....however, I throw in a small piece of a beet to add a different color. My kids LOVE this juice. Recipe for this juice can be found here: http://www.rebootwithjoe.com/mean-green-juice/
I highly recommend that site also, especially if you are looking into juicing, but you aren't sure how to get started.
